Magpie, Boston’s premier hip-handmade craft
and gifts store is excited to announce the grand opening on March 3
of their new location in the heart of Davis Square, Somerville! The
grand opening celebration will feature a 20% off sale, a "L'Homage
to Fromage" exhibit featuring paintings from the world renowned
Dedham-based MOBA (Museum of Bad Art: www.museumofbadart.org), local
celebrity DJs Jon Bernhardt (host of WMBR's Breakfast of Champions) and Stacie Slotnick (curator of The Critique of Pure Reason music series) spinning
tunes, plus refreshments from Davis Square’s own Diesel Café
and La Contessa Bakery. Only steps from the Red Line T stop, the new
Magpie space is twice as large as its old space and will allow Magpie
to carry more of their signature mix of gifts featuring hip DIY crafts,
works by indie artists and designers, and vintage accoutrements.
In just over two years Magpie has grown from carrying goods from a handful
of local crafters to over 200 local and nationally renowned crafters
and designers. Magpie features everything from the stylish bags and
wallets of Portland, Oregon’s Queen Bee to the to the clever recycled
hardcover book journals of Portland, Oregon's Ex Libris and the wildly
popular "Squirrel-Playing-Drums" t-shirts of Portland, Maine’s
Ferdinand Design.
Magpie began in the winter of 2004 when 5 friends who originally came
together to organize the DIY craft fair Bizarre Bazaar (now held yearly
in Boston, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Cleveland) decided to open a
retail location to feature the wares of Boston’s burgeoning DIY
craft scene. The store opened to rave reviews in the Huron Village area
of Cambridge and quickly became a destination for shoppers looking for
an alternative to chain store mass-produced gifts. When an opportunity
arose to move to a more T-accessible area of Somerville, Magpie migrated
to just outside the trendy Davis Square area of Somerville in the spring
of 2005. Since then the store has been flourishing and attracting customers
from across the country.
